This book explores the history of Union Mills, six miles northwest of Dodgeville, along County Q. How a group of German and Luxembourg immigrants gathered together to build this church, integrate into America, and form a successful farming community is a story repeated over and over in Iowa County. If you change the nationality, it is the same story for other “ghost towns” that had hopes of being thriving villages, but settled for being successful farmers, businessmen, and craftsmen instead. The 150 plus page book traces the immigration stories of the founding families of St. John’s and how they carved out their farms, built a church, and ran several businesses in the community. Today, hundreds of descendants can trace their history in America back to these families. Author, Joan Bennett, has explored church records, combed the newspapers for Union Mills items, and interviewed descendants for their oral histories passed down to them by their immigrant ancestors. Schools, cheese factories, flour mills, blacksmith shops, and stores of that area are included in the book, making it more than a church story.
