Knudt Johnson (Fie) – WI 12th Regiment Co. C – Perry
Knudt was born September 12, 1841, in Flosta, Dypvåg, Aust-Agder, Norway. He, with his father and a sister, left Norway in 1853. He lived between Perry and Hollandale and enlisted in the Civil War on September 20, 1861, joining the Dodgeville Guard. In time his unit was joined to the Twelfth Regiment Wis. Volunteers Infantry.
At different times, Knudt was under the command of Generals Grant, Sherman, and McPherson, He took part in the siege of Vicksburg, in the battles of Jackson, Mississippi, Baker’s Creek, Atlanta, and Jonesboro, an engagement fought in the course of Sherman’s march from Savannah to the sea, and finally in the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, the last important battle before the end of the war.
He entered as a private but was mustered out at Louisville with the rank of corporal on September 27, 1865. After receiving his discharge, he returned to Dane county, where he purchased forty acres of land. In 1869 left Wisconsin and settle near Lake Mills, Winnebago, Iowa.
